The Frederick Community College (FCC) community gathered on Monday to reveal its first on-campus sculpture, dedicated to the future growth of everyone at the institution. The piece was created by sculptor Thomas Sterner, who was drawn to the project through a call for artists.
Sterner’s goal was to reflect the college’s motto, “Let us move forward with progress,” and he found inspiration in the sycamore trees located on campus. He explained that the tree served as an effective metaphor for themes of growth, learning, and community, making it an ideal symbol for the college.
A poem by FCC alum Kiki Wilson accompanies the sculpture, emphasizing the theme of personal growth that resonates with her own educational experience at FCC. Wilson expressed that growth is central to education and was a key part of her journey while attending the college.
Sterner and Wilson both hope that the sculpture and its accompanying message will serve as a reminder for students as they pass by, encouraging them to keep pushing forward in their educational endeavors. Wilson shared her desire for the sculpture’s message to remain with students as they progress through their studies and beyond.
