Have you heard of #WhitOnStage? Frederick comedian Whitney B. talks to OUT40 about her start in comedy and her kind of funny. Check out her Q&A!
Starting from theatrical roots, Whitney has blossomed into comedy. She is a performative comedian; she uploads videos and skits to her @WhitneyB Facebook page to brighten days. Does she call herself a comedian? Not necessarily, the funny and witty actress admits. But goofy? Absolutely — a descriptor she wears with pride.
Since 5th grade my friends would always say, “OMG Whitney is so goofy and crazy.” It wasn’t until maybe 3 years ago that I decided to share that goofiness with the world.
Comedy has always been one of Whit’s many loves and making people laugh her passion since elementary school. She was always the class clown and enjoyed making the classroom a fun environment — if she could get away with it.
Whitney describes her funny as the opposite of what’s popular today. Many people prefer raunchy comedy but the new comedian says she prefers realistic comedy, or comedy based on real life with everyday relatable situations. Whitney cites Martin Lawrence, Mike Epps, Tiffany Haddish, Aries Spears, Richard Pryor, Redd Fox, Eddie Murphy, Robin Harris, and so many more.
There are sooooo many here now and no longer with us that have influenced me and that are on the list of some of my favorite comedians ever.
Q: Which famous comedian would you compare yourself to?
A: Oh man. It’s crazy because a lot of people think that she’s new onto the scene but she’s been around for awhile now. I would say Tiffany Haddish (loveeeee her) and maybe Martin Lawrence in away because i love to crack jokes, but I’ve never really compared myself to any comedians before. I feel like i have my own style of being comical and goofy.
It takes a lot, lol.
Q: What dreams do you have as a comedian?
A: My dreams are that one day, my passion for comedy will reach millions of people and hopefully be a relief to many in their times of pain and stress. I would love to make it on the big screen, so everyone can see what I’ve loved to do all my life.
