Waverley Elementary School held a ribbon cutting ceremony and tour to welcome the community in its new doors. Mayor O’Connor gleamed with pride about Waverley being a “safe and inviting place” during his tour. The building ushered in its students and their families to experience the transformation.
As a Waverley Elementary school alum, seeing this change is breathtaking. I attended Waverley in 1996; it remains most sentimental in my academic journey. A staple institution on the west side, Waverley was the humble beginning for many successful individuals in Frederick today. Now, it stands a colossal edifice, closer to the skies, reminding its students where to aim. Soar eagles, soar. A well-deserved change for the better.
Among other major renovations, Waverley Elementary has other developments in store. The school added a Child Services Department where students can access resources to alternative care in the community. Amy Wilkinson, Director of Community-Based Services at the Heartly House, explained staff will visit Waverley and work onsite to provide services to children living in DV households.
