This past Sunday, the city of Brunswick came alive with the vibrant sounds, flavors, and traditions of Puerto Rico at the “Puerto Rico in Brunswick” festival, hosted by Cultura Planera. The event, which took place downtown, celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Puerto Rican communities in Maryland and beyond, offering a day full of music, food, and festivities.
Cultura Planera, an organization dedicated to promoting and preserving Puerto Rican culture, curated a diverse lineup of events that showcased the island’s unique history and traditions. Attendees were treated to traditional bomba and plena music, dance performances, and workshops on the cultural significance of these musical genres. The lively rhythms and energetic performances brought people to their feet, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the day.
Local vendors offered a taste of Puerto Rico with delicious dishes like mofongo, empanadillas, and tostones, giving festival-goers an authentic experience of the island’s cuisine. Coquito was available for preorder where attendees can pick up and enjoy the beverage at the event. Handcrafted goods, art, and cultural displays also highlighted the work of Puerto Rican artisans and provided insight into the island’s history offering a joyful and meaningful way for the community to celebrate Puerto Rican culture and its lasting impact on the local area.
