Saturday, September 6, brought together readers, authors, and neighbors for a Read-A-Book Day celebration at Baker Park. Hosted by the Literacy Council of Frederick County and Connect U, LLC, the event honored National Literacy Month with storytelling, book signings, and community connection.
Cherish McMillan-Kilgoe kicked off the readings with her dynamic presence. A TEDx speaker, professional development coach, and certified career services provider, Cherish uses her workshops and keynotes to inspire leadership, productivity, and resilience. As the author of F.O.C.U.S and R.E.F.O.C.U.S, she shared actionable strategies for thriving with intention, delighting attendees with both insight and energy.

Jason Reynolds, acclaimed author of Ghost, brought his storytelling magic to the afternoon. Guests enjoyed his reading and had the chance to connect over signed copies of his work from Curious Iguana bookstore, celebrating his commitment to encouraging young readers. Reynolds’ visit highlighted the joy of literature and the importance of accessible, engaging stories for all ages.
Michelyve Petit, creator of Bam the Tiny Brave Elephant and Obi the Overthinking Owl, shared her imaginative tales with young attendees. Her readings captivated listeners with creativity and humor while emphasizing themes of courage and self-discovery, making her a favorite among children and adults alike.
Dr. Lorenzo York, author of From Sea to Sea: Stories by Navy Chaplains of African American Descent, offered a reflective reading from his work. As a founder of the nonprofit ECLN, Dr. York connected his stories to broader themes of history, service, and African American heritage, inspiring attendees to appreciate diverse narratives.







The event also included folk storytelling from Centro Hispano de Frederick, music, and community activities. With over 100 volunteer tutors and decades of service, the Literacy Council continues to make literacy a celebration, strengthening connections across generations and communities.
