Last Sunday, the Washington County community came together in a celebration of literature and Black voices at the Juneteenth Author Showcase. Hosted in honor of Juneteenth, the event was a vibrant display of creativity, culture, and community spirit.
The showcase featured a diverse lineup of talented Black authors, each bringing their unique perspectives and narratives to the forefront. Authors Monica Brown-Reid, Shayla O. Boyd, Jacquelina Douge, Charmyra E. Fleming, Cordelia Gaffar, Sharee Hidalgo, Elayne Bond Hyman, Arielle Jordan, Shirlene Roberts, Patricia G. Smart, Christine Titih, and Leonard Webb graced the event with their presence and literary works. From fiction to poetry, memoirs to children’s literature, the event encompassed a wide range of genres, reflecting the richness and diversity of the Black literary landscape.
Attendees had the opportunity to engage with the authors, discussing their works, inspirations, and the significance of Juneteenth in today’s context. It was a platform not only for celebrating Black excellence in literature but also for fostering meaningful dialogue and connections within the community.
The event was emceed by Erika Bell, owner of Tribe Cold Press Juice Bar in Hagerstown, who brought her energy and enthusiasm to the proceedings, adding an extra layer of warmth and hospitality.
One of the highlights of the event was the readings by the authors themselves, bringing their words to life and captivating the audience with their storytelling prowess. From tales of resilience and triumph to reflections on history and identity, each reading was a powerful reminder of the importance of storytelling as a tool for empowerment and understanding.
In addition to the readings, the showcase also featured book signings, allowing attendees to meet the authors personally and acquire signed copies of their works. It was a wonderful opportunity for book lovers to discover new voices and support Black authors in their creative endeavors.
Catering by Tribe Cold Press Juice Bar added a delicious touch to the event, providing refreshments that kept attendees energized and refreshed throughout the day.
The Washington County Juneteenth Author Showcase was not only a celebration of literature but also a celebration of Black culture, history, and accomplishments.
