Building on the success of previous years, the African Americans of Excellence (AAOE) Exhibit returned in 2026 as a signature community event spotlighting local leaders, and artists in Frederick. The exhibit has steadily grown into a cultural touchpoint, honoring individuals who contribute to the region’s social, artistic, and civic life. Earlier editions of the showcase highlighted emerging artists alongside established community figures, blending portraiture, visual art, and storytelling to celebrate achievement and legacy.
AAOE 2026 Honorees:
Leslie Barnes-Keating – Community leader and public administration professional
Rose Chaney – Advocate and community figure
William “Wickie” Lee Bowie – Leader and contributor to local business
Shirley Fossett – Community service leader
Thaddious Goodman – Advocate and community contributor

AAOE 2026 continued that momentum by deepening its focus on representation and youth engagement, reflecting the exhibit’s evolving mission to uplift future leaders while honoring those already shaping the community. As seen in the growth from the second and third annual exhibits, AAOE serves as an ongoing platform that amplifies Black excellence and reinforces Frederick’s commitment to celebrating culture and legacy.
