Written by Jay P. Wilson Jr.

#GoodReading

So, my cousin left Philly for LA to write great things for you to watch. OUT40 got an exclusive from screenwriter, Jay Wilson, Jr.

Here’s a snippet of one of them, entitled American Cartel. Trust me, you’ll enjoy it. Keep reading…

Chapter 1

EXT. ROOFTOP – DAY
We open on the blade of a CIRCULAR SAW as it cuts it’s way through a piece of plywood. The man cutting has short black hair and is wearing a tank top.
This is ANDREW.

MAN’S VOICE (O.C.)

Andrew.

The SAW powers down, Andrew turns. A GUARD is looking back at him, one hand resting on his club. LAYMAN TEXAS STATE PRISON is written on his uniform.

Andrew stands upright and brushes the sawdust off himself, revealing his ORANGE JUMPSUIT as he pulls it up over his shoulders.

GUARD

You’re off detail. Get back to holding.

INT. PRISON CORRIDOR – DAY
The halls are crowded with the most frightening men you can imagine. Andrew steps onto the floor not intimidated at all. He looks straight as he struts through the hall. Inmates move out of Andrew’s lane as he passes by.

INT. CAFETERIA – DAY
The cafeteria is claustrophobic. Inmates sit shoulder to shoulder as they eat their prison slop. As we move away from the ocean of orange jumpsuits we see
DONTE. Prison fit with tattoos. He’s standing alone by the window until Andrew approaches.

DONTE
How’s the labor work?

ANDREW

Overrated. Where’s Herschel?

DONTE
C-wing, waiting on us.

ANDREW
Where’s the phone?

Donte reaches down his jumper and takes out a CELL PHONE. He passes it to Andrew.

DONTE
Go to the photos.
Andrew swipes through the phone.

ANDREW

Good, round them up. We’ll meet by
the barracks.

Andrew takes a SCREWDRIVER out from his crouch and hands it
to Donte. Donte conceals it then they part ways.

INT. PRISON CORRIDOR – DAY
Donte walks through the C-wing corridor, which seems to be an
entirely Caucasian territory. Their tattoos look like those
of the Brotherhood.

Donte looks through the crowd over at a couple inmates, KEVIN
and BOBBY.

They lock eyes and he nods. They nod back. Donte turns and
walks away. The two inmates walk over to a prison cell.

INT. CELL – DAY
Kevin stands in the doorway. HERSCHEL, a six foot tall
wrecking ball with a farmers beard is sitting on his bunk
reading a book.

KEVIN
They’re ready.

INT. LIBRARY – DAY
There are only a couple inmates inside reading. The guard on
duty is CODY. Blond hair and wearing a baggy uniform. He’s
sitting behind the checkout desk.

Andrew walks through the doors. The few inmates inside leave
when Andrew enters. He heads right for Cody.

ANDREW

Yo Cody.

CODY
Hey Andrew.

ANDREW
You almost outta here?

CODY

Yep, so if you need a book make it
quick.

ANDREW

I won’t be long. How’s the newborn?

CODY

He’s good, healthy. Doctors say he has a hell of a grip. My pop’s
already talking about the Major Leagues.

ANDREW

I thought all you Texas boys liked football?

CODY

Well I do, it’s a hell of a game, but Sharon worries about concussions.

ANDREW

How is Sharon by the way?

CODY

Ecstatic. With the baby, my new job, I never seen her more happy.

ANDREW

That’s what’s up. I think we can agree the most important thing is
keeping the fam happy, and safe.

CODY
Couldn’t agree more.

ANDREW

Good.

Andrew takes out the cell phone.

CODY

Hey, how did you get that in here?

Andrew unlocks the screen and shows it to Cody. His face goes
blank.

Andrew lays the phone down in front of him. Cody leans
forward.

CODY (CONT’D)

Sharon?

He looks up at Andrew, confused.

CODY (CONT’D)
What the hell is this?

ANDREW

These pictures were sent–(looks closer at phone)–seven minutes ago. The men who took the pictures are still in front of your house. Their waiting
on a phone call. Whether it’s good or bad is up to you, Cody.

Cody stares at the phone.

ANDREW (CONT’D)

We just need a few doors opened. A few doors and you’re done. Do
exactly as I say and nothing will happen to your family, I promise.

Cody stares at the phone, still trying to process the situation.

ANDREW (CONT’D)

Cody?
He looks at Andrew.

ANDREW (CONT’D)
You understand what’s happening?

INT. CHECK-IN – DAY

There’s a Guard inside reading a newspaper. Cody stands at
the check-in gate. He sees Cody and buzzes him through. Not
looking up from his paper…

EDWARDS
You outta here toad?

Cody is on autopilot. He walks over to the punch clock. He
stands there for a few seconds, just looking at the wall.

EDWARDS (CONT’D)
Got something on your mind?

Cody snaps too.

CODY

Ah, nothing, I mean yea. I saw a mess in the corridor. Looks like an
inmate fingered up their lunch.

EDWARDS

What the hell you telling me for? Get your ass out there and clean
it.

CODY
I’m off.

Edwards closes his paper.

EDWARDS

You weren’t off when you walked by it.

CODY
Well, I’m off now.

Edwards gives Cody the thousand yard stare, then he throws
his paper on the table.

EDWARDS

You’re quite cozy in that library. I can’t wait to see you in normal
circulation. Maybe you’ll start pulling your fucking weight. Now
stay the fuck here until I get back.

Edwards gets up from his chair. He takes off his RADIO and
puts it on the control panel. Edwards pushes past Cody as he
storms out. As soon as Edwards is out of view Cody dashes to
the CONTROL PANEL.
INT. CORRIDOR – DAY
The boys are waiting outside a security door. Herschel is
behind them. Kevin and Bobby watch for any incoming guards.
Andrew peeks through the glass plate in the center of the
security door.

ANDREW
Four guards inside.

KEVIN
Shit, that’s too many.

DONTE

It’s five of us, it’s fine.

Andrew steps aside and Donte takes a look.
Donte’s POV: There’s a guard in the far corner of the room
standing by the security desk.

DONTE (CONT’D)
I got the guard by the desk.

BOBBY
You sure?

DONTE

Yea I’m sure. You just worry about
keeping up.

ANDREW

Okay, Donte’s in first, then me. You two be right on my coat tails.

Kevin and Bobby nod.

ANDREW (CONT’D)

Herschel–

HERSCHEL

–You must be mistaken son.

Andrew sighs.

ANDREW

Only way this is going to work is if we have a plan.

HERSCHEL

My plan is to make it out this prison, no matter how many guards
are in my way.

Donte takes out his screw driver.

ANDREW

Alright, look for the go.

Donte looks through glass plate at the MONITORS on the
control booth. Andrew also takes out his screwdriver.

INT. HALLWAY – DAY
Edwards stands at the end of the hallway. He looks around but
he sees no sign of any bodily fluids.

EDWARDS
What the fuck?

He turns back the way he came.

INT. CHECK-IN – DAY
Cody is still fumbling around at the security desk. He sifts
through the on-screen commands.

Cody changes cameras until he sees Andrew and the group
standing outside the security door.

Cody presses a few buttons on the keyboard.

INT. PRISON CORRIDOR – DAY

Donte POV: The monitors on the control panel turn OFF. The
guard next to the panel notices. He taps on the panel.

DONTE
Get ready.

INT. CHECK-IN – DAY
Cody sifts through the commands until he gets to the SECURITY
DOOR LOCK. He presses the unlock.

INT. CORRIDOR – DAY
The buzzer sounds and the door CLICKS open. Donte wastes no
time.

INT. BARRACKS – CONTINUOUS
Donte comes bursting through the door. Andrew and the rest
are right behind him.

Donte trucks his way through the guard in the middle of the
room, knocking him to the ground.

Andrew dives on the fallen guard and holds his screwdriver to
his neck.

The guard by the control panel goes for the alarm. Just
before he reaches the button, Donte goes airborne and tackles
the guard into the panel.

Andrew holds his hostage down.

ANDREW
Stop fucking moving.

Andrew looks back. Kevin and Bobby are stomping one guard
while Herschel repeatedly smashes another guards head into
the ground.

ANDREW (CONT’D)
Enough! Let’s move.

Andrew drags his hostage over to the Armory. There’s a keypad
lock on the door. Andrew presses the screwdriver hard into
the guards neck.

ANDREW (CONT’D)

Open it now or I’ll use you as an example and get your partner to do
it anyway.

The guard reluctantly obeys. He swipes his key card and
punches in the code. Andrew pulls him away and Herschel runs
into the armory.
INT. ARMORY – DAY
Herschel makes a b-line straight for the gun rack on the back
table. He gathers a few ASSAULT RIFLES and spreads them out
on the table.

There’s a bucket of MAGAZINE CLIPS on the floor. He grabs a
handful of ammo and loads up.

INT. BARRACKS – DAY
The boys have the guards pinned down. Herschel steps out the
armory and tosses a weapon to Kevin and Bobby. The boys let
them up.

Kevin and Bobby keep them on their knees at gun point.
Herschel hands Andrew his gun.

HERSCHEL

Try not to blow your load prematurely.

Andrew snatches the gun away from him.

ANDREW

Try not to kill anymore guards.

Bobby mugs the guard with his barrel.

BOBBY

Get up.

They pick them up off the floor. Andrew pushes the EXIT door.
It’s locked.

ANDREW

Shit. What the fuck, Cody.

INT. CHECK-IN – DAY
Cody watches them on the monitors.

Dramatic pause.

Cody finally reaches for the controls…

EDWARDS (O.C.)

Hey!

Cody jumps. Edwards is standing outside the check-in gate.

EDWARDS (CONT’D)

There’s nothing there toad. Open the fucking gate.

Cody freezes.

INT. BARRACKS – DAY
DONTE

Think something happen?

ANDREW
I don’t know.

HERSCHEL

And here I was, starting to think you boys were smart. I know what’s
going on.

Herschel kicks one of guards down to his knees.

ANDREW

What the fuck are you doing?

HERSCHEL
Giving Cody a choice.

Herschel presses his rifle on the guards temple.

HERSCHEL (CONT’D)

He’s got till three.

He holds THREE fingers up at the security camera.

INT. CHECK-IN – DAY
Cody keeps his head on a swivel, watching the monitor and Edwards.

EDWARDS

Toad, open the fucking gate.

CODY
I.. I…

Cody can’t get the words out. He watches in horror as Herschel withdraws a finger.

INT. BARRACKS – DAY
Andrew tries to deflate the situation.

ANDREW
We need him Herschel.

KEVIN
We got one left.

ANDREW
We need both.

HERSCHEL

Don’t none of that mean shit if we
can’t make it out this door.

Herschel retracts another finger.

INT. CHECK-IN – DAY
Cody doesn’t chance waiting any longer. He quickly unlocks the EXIT door using the control panel.

EDWARDS

What the fuck are you doing?

INT. BARRACKS – DAY
The doors release. Andrew pushes them open. Herschel grins,
then removes the barrel from the guard’s head.

HERSCHEL
Let’s go then.

Kevin and Bobby drag the guards out with Herschel right behind them. Andrew and Donte trade looks before exiting.

INT. CHECK-IN – DAY
Cody watches on the monitor as they go through the exit.

EDWARDS

I said what the fuck are you touching that for? Open this goddamn gate.

CODY

I’m sorry, I didn’t have a choice.
I’m sorry.

That’s when Edwards starts to realize.

EDWARDS

God Cody, what did you do?

Edwards reaches for his waist. He looks up at his RADIO sitting on the panel.

EDWARDS (CONT’D)

It’s not too late, open the gate Cody.

CODY
I can’t.

EDWARDS

Cody–

CODY
–I’m sorry.

EDWARDS

Shit!

Edwards quickly turns tail.
