OUT40 caught up with Jeph Phillips, owner of Luxe Reserve, a self-care brand for girl bosses.
From fashion to home decor and beauty products, Luxe Reserve is the haven for women entrepreneurs to alleviate the stresses of the daily grind. Jeph Phillips, a current Frederick resident, details how she started and sits down with Kiki to discuss the landscape of young women in business today. What made you start Luxe Reserve?
Luxe Reserve was created at a time where I was just starting my entrepreneurial journey and felt I didn’t have the knowledge or support. So the goal was to start a business that made women like me feel supported.
What’s the LR purpose? Who is it for?
The purpose is to encourage ambitious women to fiercely follow their dreams and to also stress the importance of self-care. It’s for female entrepreneurs and all around superwomen.
Who is Jeph? How have you incorporated yourself and your story with Luxe Reserve?
I’m just a person who enjoys seeing and helping other people win. Luxe Reserve is me, literally. As I grow and evolve, so does my brand. It’s always been about helping women not feel how I felt when I started out.

1. Everyone ain’t an expert.
There have been so many conventions, seminars, and expos as of late. But are they really worth your time? So many claim to be an expert but are not equipped with the knowledge and experience needed as one. As a result, you’re sold a ticket to a faux empowerment conference and in turn, receive no takeaways for your purchase. Like Jeph said, do your homework and check their credentials, don’t get swindled by their stories. Are they qualified? Is the exchange (your money for their information) worth it? Or can you find this information for free elsewhere? Google is a wonderful place.
Because we live in a man’s world, women have had to adjust. It is no different in the world of business. In fact, it is probably the most important arena. Maintaining professional and healthy boundaries should be a key value in a businesswoman’s own book of codes and ethics. Jeph does not work with the opposite sex unless they’re down for the “girl gang” with true intentions to support. Many women entrepreneurs have fallen for the “let’s do business” line from a man thinking he genuinely sees potential, that in turn ends up being bait for his self-serving interests. Time, energy, and investments can be lost if boundaries aren’t established in the beginning, and upheld throughout the business relationship. Girl, stay focused!
3. Mixing Business with Pleasure (Personal).
Fast forward. Okay, so you didn’t stay focused and allowed him to overstep his boundaries. Now what? Well, you do it like a boss would. Do your homework. Prepare. Own it. If you’re going to mix your business with your private life, know what comes with it. Know exactly what pitfalls can happen and plan to prevent them. Minimize the distractions and keep the focus on the continual development and progression of your business. After all, isn’t that why he’s here? Lastly, don’t sabotage your business for the D. But have fun girl!
4. To Smile or Not To Smile?
How do you conduct yourself with others during business? Some women feel pressured to be friendly because niceness and kindness is not only expected from women, but can get you far and can build rapport quickly. Others feel compelled to be aggressive because in order to play with the big boys, you have to have tough skin in a competitive dog-eat-dog society. Both of these tactics are tools businesswomen have been conditioned to learn for fear of being underestimated, undermined, or discredited. Jeph says these projections are weaknesses. Although they may be defense mechanisms and proactive approaches, you are allowing yourself to be controlled by vulnerabilities when actually, it can be used as strengths. Be yourself. Don’t feel forced to warp your personality or offer a different version to be a successful powerhouse, just go with how you feel.
You know who you are. Show them who you are and drop the mic.
5. Collaboration, Not Competition.
Men learn brotherhood and teamwork early. For women, it’s a lesson learned later. We learn we are more powerful together as we age. For Jeph, there’s no reason to compete. A lot of people do what I do, but they can’t do it like I can. The security in your gift, idea, venture, or talent should speak for itself. Let’s be honest, creatives can definitely be competitive. Maybe someone else produced an idea that’s been bouncing around your head for months. Or you think you can produce better quality of work. Don’t let competitive thoughts deter or rob you of your path. Many times our rivals are imaginary. Instead of hating from the outside, why don’t you join them and learn a thing or two? You never know what sparks may fly.

It encompasses everything Luxe Reserve stands for. It’s not only about staying motivated and on track with your goals, it’s also about taking time for self-care. So I really love the self-care products included, I think it adds a special touch to being a woman who is also a boss.

Two African-American young men were asking for a dollar to purchase more fair tickets and ride more rides. Upon approaching John Weed and asking him for $1, Weed became aggressive, called the young men racial slurs, and spit on the young men. Weed and the young men proceeded to step out of line. The video showed Weed and one of the African-American young men encircled by onlookers recording, preparing to engage in a physical altercation. The young man struck and spit on Weed, and Weed fell to the ground. Upon being transported for medical attention, Weed succumbed to his injuries.
